About
Hi, my name is Hans and this is my fine-art print store, where you can buy some of my artworks. I thought it would be nice to say a few things about myself and my work.
After a successful career in IT I retired a few years ago, so I was looking for a new challenge and found it in Computer-generated art or Generative Art to be more precise. Art, that emerges out of code without any input data, without transforming or manipulating an existing picture or any other input data set, just a set of rules combined with synthetically generated data and some randomness.
I had not written a single line of code for more than 20 years and my programming skills were a little rusty. I started by learning Processing, a programming language that was created in 2001 for visual artists. Then I spent a couple of months playing around, doing some research and exploring all kinds of algorithms. I learned a lot from the books of Matt Pearson, Daniel Shiffman, Casey Reas, Yu Zhang and Mathias Funk and I'd like to thank these guys for having written these books.
I also started to dive into the history of Computer Art. I found a lot of inspiration in the work and essays of artists like Manfred Mohr, a pioneer in the field and Tyler Hobbs, a new star who took Generative Art to a new level in 2021 by his Fidenza series.
What matters most to me in the work I am doing is the process itself, starting with an idea and then narrowing it down and exploring the aesthetic possibilities of an algorithm is an exciting journey. At a certain moment the Computer starts to drive the process by creating completely unexpected outcomes, which in turn triggers new ideas and explorations.
All artworks on this site are based on my own "hand-written" code. The only 3rd party code which I use from time to time is Open Simplex Noise by Kurt Spencer.
All fine-art prints that you can buy in the store are produced by Whitewall, a professional lab. WhiteWall offers unique know-how in terms of printing, guaranteeing high-quality Hahnemühle brand papers and ensuring a perfect result for giclée prints. This is also the reason for the prices you see, especially for bigger formats under acrylic glass or on the Artbox. My markup is only there to recover my ongoing costs for hosting, web space and computer equipment.
At the moment I'm shipping to the whole of European countries.
I'd be happy to receive your feedback or comments via the contact form.
